Script Part 1: “That’s Amore”

That’s Amore performed by Dean Martin, written by Jack Brooks, first appeared in The Caddy, a black-and-white movie that premiered in 1953. The famous line: “When a moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie. That’s amore!” first appeared in the movie, it became a big hit. However, it never made the #1 Hit; despite this, Dean Martin was already on the come up with being apart of the Rat Pack which included Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis Jr, Joey Bishop, and of course Dean Martin. This song was meant to be a parody to poke fun at the seriousness faced with Italy at the time with Mussolini. However, it was then used in the movie “The Caddy”. “The Caddy” actually stars Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, who sing the song together with a room full of people. That’s Amoré has become renown in many TV shows and movies such as The Simpsons, Friends, White Chicks, Enchanted, and more! According to Lyricsmode, the term “gay tarantella” means dance party, and gay meaning happy. Also, amore means love, and when he says “vita bella” it means: “beautiful life.”

That’s Amoré by Dean Martin

When a moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That’s amore
When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine
That’s amore
Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you’ll sing “Vita bella”
Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay
Like a gay tarantella”

That’s Amoré by Dean Martin made it’s first appearance in the 1953 movie/musical “The Caddy” which started Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in a classic black-and-white film which introduced us to a beloved song.

“That’s Amore was recorded in Martin’s pre-suave era. A charming, if goofy, parody of popular Neapolitan organ-grinder music, That’s Amore was one of many songs from the early Fifties that helped rehabilitate Italy’s image as a land of magic and romance that had somehow been lured from its festive moorings by the glum fascist Benito Mussolini.”

That’s Amoré has become renown in many TV shows and movies such as The Simpsons, Friends (skip to 4:35), White Chicks, Enchanted, and of course The Caddy! There are many more TV shows and movies that have Dean Martin’s song in it, I just wanted to provide the readers with all of the examples I could find on Youtube!

Why Did I Choose This Song?

I have always heard this song, I believe the first time I heard it was when The Simpsons made their own rendition about it. The tune itself was so catchy! I would hear it in Italian restaurants like one of my favorite places: D’Amicos. I didn’t even know the full lyrics to the song, but I wanted to learn more about this song. It has caught my ears for as long as I can remember. Also, I loved Frank Sinatra growing up and Dean Martin and him were apart of the Rat Pack.

Quick Facts about That’s Amoré:

  • The song was written by Jack Brooks and composed by Harry Warren.
  • When Dean Martin recorded this outside of the movie The Caddy, he recorded it with Dick Stabile and His Orchestra and it was put on the album: “Dean Martin: The Capitol Recordings, Vol.4. (Spotify)
  • When talking about the lyrics of the song, “gay tarantella” means dance party, gay meaning happy. (LyricsMode).
  • Vita Bella: beautiful life
  • Amoré: love.

Whenever I listen to this song I always picture myself in Italy eating all the Italian food, ever. Who doesn’t love pizza?

The Song That Got Me Hooked to Billie Eilish

“When you gimme those ocean eyes
I’m scared
I’ve never fallen from quite this high
Falling into your ocean eyes
Those ocean eyes

Released on SoundCloud and written by her brother Finneas, “Ocean Eyes” was originally meant for her brother’s band; however, Billie’s dance instructor wanted her to sing and record this song so they could choreograph a dance to the song. Putting in on SoundCloud, the now popular artist, put a free download available for her dance teacher to access; however, people noticed the song very quickly and it went viral. What’s the meaning behind “Ocean Eyes”?
Even though Billie didn’t write the song, in fact, she said that she has never been in love before. She gagged in an interview when even talking about love, note: she was 15.
However, Billie wanted to also insert herself in the shoes of those who have been hurt and attempting to understand how they felt and what they went through.

The dance video for “Ocean Eyes”

When Billie dropped the song and started doing multiple interviews she said this in her Teen Vogue interview: “Hillydilly, a music discovery website, found it and posted it and it just got bigger and bigger. It was really surreal. Then, Danny Ruckasin, who is now my manager, reached out to my brother and was like, “dude, this is going to get huge and I think you’re going to need help along the way. I want to help you guys.” We were like, “that’s swag!””From there on, Billie became an idol, she just recently released her new album “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO” which has increased her monthly listeners on Spotify to 46.6 million.

How has Billie evolved since then?

Billie has collaborated with artists such as Khalid, who has brought in a bigger fan base for her, also she has just recently performed at Coachella and announced a new collaboration with Rosalía which was just confirmed by Billboard. With her new album, collaborations, and tours, Billie is grabbing attention from listeners around the world. When I first listened to her song “Ocean Eyes” it was nothing like I was expected…it was even greater.

Mac Demarco: “All of Our Yesterdays”

Hollow or Innovative?

When I saw a post on Pitchfork, writing about his new song released on Youtube on April 2, 2019…I couldn’t believe I forgot about this artist who I used to listen to my senior year in high school back in 2014. I remember Demarco when I first heard the song “Freaking Out the Neighborhood,” and “Chamber of Reflection.”
Mac Demarco has a voice unlike anything I have ever heard before. It’s a mix of haunting, comforting, and unique. I haven’t heard anyone talk about him for YEARS. Presumably, I thought he stopped making music. However, I was very wrong and he just released an album in 2017 called “Old Dog Demos” and just released another two Singles: “All of Our Yesterdays” and “Nobody” just this year. With over 3.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Demarco is not an underground musician anymore.

With the release of his new single, listeners wonder if he lost his 80s vibe that a lot of listeners originally fell in love with. Some people refer to his new single as hollow and redundant; however, I disagree. As people get older, the music changes. In my opinion, Demarco is simply evolving to match his personality and to represent his bigger and better album. With performances at Coachella and going on an international tour, there’s no doubt that Mac is going to be on the come up.

Finding Solace in a Podcast

Listening to a podcast has been on my to-do list for Lord knows how long. I have heard many Youtubers say it’s how they start their day by listening to an inspirational or positive podcast. After doing a little bit of digging, I came across Sophie Cliff, who has a series called Practical Positivity. I decided to listen to her most recent episode: Embracing Change (Episode 17). Note: the link is for an app called: Podcast Addict. The podcast was 12 minutes long that comes from her series. The series that started in December of 2018 and has posted weekly ever since she started in December. The topics have covered work-life balance, confidence, everyday life, toxic people, stress, books about positivity, and just overall reflection of life and how to be positive. It is just her talking in her podcasts, which is actually refreshing compared to when you’re listening to the radio when there is an entire group of people talking. In this specific episode she talks about embracing change and how to cope with it. This was extremely informative to me because I have a fiance and he recently just joined the military so it has been a lot lately. She tells the listeners to embrace the change and question why you fear it if you do, and to take baby steps–it’s not necessary to have to jump into change.

Me gaining positive vibes from Sophie Cliff

When it comes to multimodality,  the thing that appeared to me most about Sophie’s podcast is that she had an introduction with this peppy upbeat music in the beginning, she waited for a couple of seconds, then started to talk over the music, and then it faded out and she began talking. She has a soft voice, it isn’t pounding into the microphone when she says certain things. She doesn’t have music in between there, but she keeps a good pacing with her words. It’s not boring or mundane because she changes the subject when there’s nothing more to say. The cover of her podcast is her in a vibrant teal background with bright clothing on followed decals saying “Practical Positivity” and “With Sophie Grace.” I really liked seeing how happy she looked in her album. If you scroll over to look at her information, you can see that she has her Instagram, Pinterest, website (where you can order her book), e-mail, and the website to her blog. She also includes a summary to each podcast she does. Sophie does a really great job at covering all of the bases and figuring out what information is necessary and what will clutter things up.
